Learning by doing: get out into the field with the archaeologists of SHiP to uncover northeast Ohio’s historic (and prehistoric!) past.
Northeastern Ohio is home to thousands of archaeological sites ranging from rockshelters inhabited by Paleoindians to scores of cemeteries of the 20th century. Archaeology is the study of the human past through its material remains and part of SHiP’s mission is its involvement in historic discovery and preservation through the scientific methods of modern archaeology.
While it takes decades to become a professional archaeologist, anyone with some targeted training and careful oversight can participate in the archaeological process of discovery – and make a contribution to our understanding of all the human work that has shaped northeastern Ohio. SHiP offers opportunities to its registered SHiPmates to join us in fieldwork at real archaeological sites.
If you are interested in joining us as a SHiPmate, not only will you receive notices of news and our public events like lectures and tours, but you will also be eligible to join us on field projects as volunteer scientists. Please contact us for more information and to get registered.
